We discourage feeding urban wildlife (birds and animals) such as pigeons and squirrels.
Please consider the following:
If small animals like squirrels are dependent on handouts, it can prevent them from foraging on natural food sources off-property, making them nutritionally deficient (not getting proper nutrients).
Animals like squirrels and birds can lose their natural fear of people when they begin to associate people with food. While some may admire the company of squirrels, others in the neighborhood may not and could react differently to a bold or approaching squirrel.
Feeding can also cause an unnatural number of squirrels to congregate in an area, larger than what the surrounding natural resources can support. This can lead to an increase in the spread of zoonotic diseases.
Urban wildlife can cause significant property damage. We must protect neighbours from animals like squirrels digging up flower beds, chewing on windowsills, damaging vehicles, or nesting within enclosed spaces.
Learn about Urban Squirrels
Toronto is home to a wide variety of squirrel species. These little rodents are so common in the wildlife scene of the city that you commonly see them along tall establishments or dancing from one tree branch to another.
